North Dakota Senator Introduces Veterans Access to Extended Care Act

Veterans Access to Extended Care ActOn March 16, senators John Hoeven of North Dakota and Joe Manchin of West Virginia introduced the Veterans Access to Extended Care Act, which would allow veterans to obtain greater access to long-term care in their home communities.

The bipartisan legislation aims to make accessing nearby long-term facilities easier for veterans. Specifically, it would allow veterans to stay in nearby nursing homes in their home communities as those nursing homes would be able to receive Veterans Administration reimbursement.

Family, friends and community serve as a vital support network throughout our lives, and our veterans should not be forced to choose between being near their loved ones and accessing the care they need, Hoeven said in a statement online.

According to the 2012 census, there are more than 12 million veterans age 65 or older.Currently, the VA is authorized to enter into contracts with extended care providers, but federal reporting requirements have prevented many long-term care facilities from admitting VA patients. The Hoeven-Manchin bill would give the VA the authority it needs to enter into Provider Agreements with nursing centers, hospice care and home health care services.

During the last Congress, nearly half of the Senate and more than 100 House of Representatives members endorsed a similar measure.

This small, commonsense change will impact a large number of our veterans and their families who deserve quality, long-term care. Hoeven added.

Veterans who fought and sacrificed for our country deserve to receive their benefits they deserve. If you have been denied the benefits you need, Vets National Advocates can help.
